Photograph 05 of 05.

A black-and-white photograph of an empty playground swing hanging on chains in the foreground, with a covered pavilion and distant trees in the background.

Marfa Swing

Marfa is boring and inspiring at the same time, as is a lot of West Texas. It's slow. Things are closed when Google says they're open. Posted hours are more of a suggestion than a rule. You can go hours without seeing another person. This day was hot. And boring. The kind of boring that gets you out the door, into the car, driving around with a camera. Things move slower out here, and that can lead to creativity. This playground is emblematic. The same equipment I remember from the 70s and 80s — not the sanitized brand-new plastic of suburban developments, no soft ground. You can feel the heat coming off it from the photograph. They're long past their age of utility, but I bet people still enjoy them. I sure did.
